Here`s a healthy alternative to snacking, made from natural ingredients you can feel good about what you`re putting into your body. This recipe does have a 2 hour cooking time, but it is required to get the apples dried out and crispy, don't try to shorten the cook time by raising the temperature.
What you need:
Apples (you can pretty much use any apple you like, I used Granny Smith, which gave the crisps a very tart flavour, you might want to use Macintosh or Prince Edward Apples for something sweeter)
Cinnamon (optional)
Nutmeg (optional)
Mandoline or sharp knife
What to do:
Preheat your oven to 200 F.
Wash and dry your apples. If you have an apple corer, core your apples, if not you can cut out the seeds after you have sliced them.
Using a mandoline or a sharp knife, slice your apples very thinly (approximately 1/8 inch). Note: a mandoline is a great kitchen tool and if you don't already have one you might consider purchasing one, I got mine from Kitchen Stuff Plus for $20. Cut out the seeds using a knife if you didn't core the apple to start.
Lay your apple slices on a parchment lined baking sheet. Make sure that the apples are not overlapping. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg, or leave them naked if you like.
Bake in the oven for 1 hour. Remove and flip the apples. Place back in the oven for another hour to finish up.
Once you have baked the apples for 2 hours, remove from the oven and let them cool completely before enjoying.
Note: You can do a taste test to make sure the apples are at the crispiness that you like. At around the 2 hour mark, remove one slice and let it cool on the counter, try it to see if you like its texture. If it passes the test remove the rest from the oven, if not, allow to cook for another ten minutes and try again.
