This recipe is so simple and tastes so good without having to slave over the stove for ours to get that authentic taste. All you need: A large pot Water Can of sweetened condensed milk (I usually make a few cans since you're already making it and itwill last in the fridge up to 3 weeks) What to do: Remove the labels from the cans. fill a large sauce pan or stock pot with water and bring to a boil. Carefully using a slotted spatula or tongs lower the can of condensed milk into the boiling water. Make sure the water fully covers the can. Put a lid on the pot and turn the heat to low. Simmer in the boiling water for 3 hours. ***Note: place the can on its side and not upright to allow it to spin in the water and allow the water to move around the can*** Check the water level every 30 minutes to make sure the can is still completely covered with water. Never allow the can to be exposed, this could cause the can to overheat and explode. I've never had to re-fill my water, but better safe than sorry.
After 3 hours very carefully remove the can from the water and allow to cool completely before opening. If you are letting it cool at room temperature, it takes about 2 to 3 hours to cool completely, or 1 hour in the fridge. Please do not try opening the can before it has cooled, otherwise it will spew hot caramel all over. Once it has completely cooled, open the can to find perfectly creamy and delicious dulce de leche.
