This is such a fun idea for a barbecue or any summertime get together. A friend of mine sent me this idea from sheknows.com and I just had to try it. It's so much easier than it looks and it makes the perfect centrepiece for you backyard function.
What you need:
1 Watermelon
4 Celery stalks
Blueberries or blackberries
Assorted fruit
Wooden skewers and toothpicks
What to do:
Soak your celery stalk in water in the fridge over night to stiffen the stalks.
Cut the top 1/3rd of your watermelon and set aside.
Using a melon baller scoop out the watermelon and save the balled watermelon for your skewers. Once you have balled all the watermelon, using a spoon scrape the sides to give it an even look. Do the same with the top of the watermelon.
Turn the larger watermelon upside down and cut four small holes in the bottom. Keep the holes small so that the celery stalks fit in very tightly, if it is too loose it will not be as sturdy. Insert your celery sticks into the holes (it's okay if they go through to the other side).
Turn your watermelon right side up and make sure it stands (I found that I had to place it on a paper towel otherwise the celery "legs" would slip.
Dump in a handful or two of blueberries or blackberries (this represents the coals). Take your wooden skewers and begin placing them through the top of the watermelon, stop just before piercing the other side (this will be your grill).
Using kitchen sheers cut the ends of the skewers. If you have a little bit sticking out, using the side of your sheers push the skewers in slightly until they are flush with the watermelon rind.
To make the lid, take the smaller watermelon and position it on a slant, pin it in place using 4 or 5 toothpicks.
Use your watermelon balls, assorted fruit and wooden skewers to make fruit kabobs. Place a few on top of your grill to finish the presentation and the rest around your watermelon grill.
